We were thrilled to hear the news last month about the Nancy Flight Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction Editing. Nancy was one of the founding members of West Coast Editorial Associates, in 1992, and went on to become one of Canada’s most respected and influential editors.

The $25,000 annual prize, funded by a large gift from Nancy, is being launched in 2026, the Writers’ Trust’s 50th anniversary. It is the largest prize for editors in Canada. Winners will be selected each year by a three-member, independent judging panel appointed by the Writers’ Trust. Three finalists will be shortlisted, each receiving $2,500.

The prize “recognizes the vital role editors play in shaping, strengthening, and supporting nonfiction works.” It not only celebrates the craft of nonfiction editing but ensures “lasting recognition for the editorial professionals who help Canadian books reach their fullest potential.” Amen to that.

And thank you, Nancy. What a perfect reflection of the brilliance, leadership, and generous spirit that have always informed your career as an editor.
