Ruth, a Certified Professional Editor (Hon.), began her editing career with Vancouver book publisher Self-Counsel Press when she was fresh out of university with an English degree. Sixteen years later, having worked her way up to managing editor, she took the leap into the world of an independent consultant, affording her the opportunity to work on a broad range of projects, from non-fiction books to communications for professional associations to training materials for educators, and much more. She relishes the collaborative process of working with clients, writers, and designers to reach the common goal of turning the prose of content experts into appealing audience-targeted reading.
Ruth taught a variety of editing courses for Simon Fraser University for almost 20 years, and she offers customized in-person workshops for any organization keen to improve communications or writing and editing practice. One-on-one coaching is also one of her strengths, both in person and online.
She has served on several national committees of Editors Canada, including being chair of the committee that steered the launch of the world-class Certification Program.
Outside of work, Ruth pursues fitness with a passion, playing soccer, swimming, working out, and cycling, which balances nicely with her more sedate interests of playing the piano, solving the latest crossword, crafting crewel needlework, regaining her French-language skills, and—of course—reading.
